Sheryn Leaf, from Indonesia, is currently studying Chinese Language and Culture.

Q: What food would you recommend in Indonesia?
Sheryn: I recommend Nasi Goreng, Rendang, and Satay. They are classic Indonesian dishes with rich flavors, and each region has its own variation. This is also a major feature of Indonesian cuisine.
Q: What impressed you most about Indonesia’s geography?
Sheryn: Its diversity really stands out to me. Indonesia has thousands of islands, volcanoes, and tropical rainforests. Places like Mount Bromo are breathtaking. Also, being near the equator, it has a warm climate all year round, which supports rich ecosystems.
Q: What do you think is the most underrated treasure in Indonesia?
Sheryn: I would say some untouched islands like Raja Ampat and Sumba. Most tourists prefer Bali because it’s famous and convenient, but these lesser-known places are more natural, less crowded, and offer a more authentic cultural experience.
Q: Can you tell us more about what makes these places special?
Sheryn: Sure. Raja Ampat is one of the best diving destinations in the world, with incredible marine biodiversity and well-preserved coral reefs. Sumba, on the other hand, is more about culture — it still keeps many traditional customs and lifestyles, which is quite rare nowadays.

Q: What tourist attractions would you recommend and why?
Sheryn: I would recommend Borobudur, Komodo National Park, and Bali. Borobudur is historically significant, Komodo is unique for wildlife, and Bali combines natural scenery and cultural experiences, making it an ideal destination for first-time visitors to Indonesia.
Q: What is considered impolite in Indonesia?
Sheryn: In some areas, using your left hand to give something is considered impolite. Also, showing a lack of respect to elders, like speaking too directly, may be seen as rude. Politeness is very important in Indonesia.
Q: What are some important cultural values in Indonesia?
Sheryn: I think the most important concept is "Gotong Royong", which is a spirit of mutual assistance and collective cooperation. In many communities in Indonesia, people will voluntarily work together to accomplish certain tasks, such as building roads and organizing events. This value that emphasizes the collective rather than the individual actually makes people feel very warm and reflects the close connection between people.

Q: What are the cultural differences between Indonesia and China?
Sheryn:I think a very obvious difference lies in the aspects of diet and religion. Indonesian food usually uses a lot of spices and has a stronger flavor, while Chinese cuisine is more diverse. Another point is that Indonesia is a multi-religious country, and religion plays a significant role in the daily lives of many people, such as in dietary habits and festivals, which are all affected.
Q: Are there differences in daily lifestyle or routines?
Sheryn: Life in Indonesia is generally slower. People there place more emphasis on enjoying life rather than solely pursuing efficiency. For instance, the lifestyles in many places are quite laid-back. People spend more time with their families and friends, which contrasts with some cities that have a faster pace of life.
Q: How would you describe Indonesia in one sentence?
Sheryn: I would say, Indonesia is a country that combines natural beauty, cultural diversity, and strong traditions — truly a paradise written in islands. Whether it is for traveling or living, it can offer very unique experiences.
