Hajar Zarrouk, from Morocco, who is studying Chinese language and culture now.
Q1: Can you recommend your top 5 Moroccan food to me?
Hajar Zarrouk: Because I'm vegetarian, there's actually very little I can recommend hahaha. 1. Couscous In my family, we eat this dish every Friday. 2.Tajin This is a casserole and put delicious vegetables in it, there are chicken pots, vegetable pots, mutton balls pots, etc. 3.Briouat This is made with different parts of beef, a triangular shape, very crispy 4.Passtila This is a patty, which will be filled with chicken or pigeon meat. 5. Herira Soup This is usually the first bite we eat after fasting at dusk in Ramadan.
Q2: Why did you become a vegetarian? Can you tell me about your vegetarian philosophy?
Hajar Zarrouk: You have to know that people who choose to become vegetarian all have different vegetarian ways, some people only eat vegetables, some eat vegetables but also eat fish and seafood etc. Among them, I am the one who only eats vegetables. I became a vegetarian for two reasons: one was that I had previously seen a report about scientific studies by scientists that found that eating meat increases the likelihood of cancer. Of course, this does not mean that you will not get cancer if you don't eat meat, nor that people who eat meat will get cancer. It's just a possibility. There are also people who eat meat all their lives and still live a long life. I'm mainly because I have relatives in my family who died of cancer, so the likelihood of me dying of cancer is quite high, and I want to reduce the possibility of this happening as much as possible. The second reason is that I have found that there is an indiscriminate killing of animals all over the world. I'm not saying not to kill animals, because you have to know that the abundance of many animals and plants in nature can also affect the ecological balance, so proper killing is still necessary to maintain the ecological community. But people tend to kill animals that shouldn't be killed in order to eat some delicacies, and I don't think that's right. That's why I want to convey the idea of environmental protection through my veganism.
Q3: Why do you do so much outdoor sports?
Hajar Zarrouk: Because when I was studying, I would go to other cities in Morocco during the summer holidays to study activities like summer camps, and I started to get in touch with these sports and love them. Did you know that every city in Morocco has a different representative movement? For example, in Essaouira city, the special sport in our city is surfing, because we have the sea there and the wind is relatively strong, so the waves are also big, which is very suitable for surfing.
Q4: Why did you choose to come to China and then learn Chinese?
Hajar Zarrouk: After graduating from high school, I had the idea of studying abroad. Then I chose to study abroad in Asian cities, such as Iran, China, Japan, South Korea, etc. But I like a challenge, I want to go to a country and culture that is completely out of my comfort zone, and then combined with the study abroad policies of various countries (China especially supports foreign students to study in China, and the scholarships are also very generous), and finally I chose to come to China - a country that is different from Morocco in terms of language, culture, climate, food and other aspects. In addition, in the perception of Moroccans, Chinese is particularly difficult. Now that I've learned it, I'm real, it's really hard, I think it's the hardest language in the world to learn! I felt like I was going to "rise to the challenge" and challenge myself. Coupled with the incomprehension of my family and the people around me, it deepened my idea of "daring the tiger to its mountain lair" hahahaha.
Q5: Which cities in China have you visited? One of your favorites?
Hajar Zarrouk: I have been to Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Shanghai. One of my favorite is Chengdu because I especially like the lifestyle and the pandas. Life there feels very leisurely, a very comfortable way of life. What's more, giant pandas are really cute! I think the perception of a city is determined by the tourist experience. Maybe it's because I feel very comfortable when I'm in Chengdu, so I like it very much. I usually travel by myself, because I think that if a group of people go out to play, they need to have the same interests, otherwise they will have different opinions on the choice of attractions, and instead of going to some of the places I want to go with my friends, I still feel more comfortable going to all the places I want to go by myself.
