Aziz, from Algeria, a student majoring in Chinese language and culture in the class of 2024.

Wei Qinxi: In fact, I am very curious about how you know our school?

Aziz: Actually, I was in Turkey with my brother, and he strongly suggested that I come to China to study. At that time, I didn't know much about China, so I spent some time searching for information about China, including universities, how to apply for schools and so on. Then I contacted the agency and they recommended ZISU to me. I also looked up some information about this school, and I thought ZISU was very good, so I submitted the application materials and came here.

Wei Qinxi: Could you give us a brief introduction of your country? As far as I know, Algeria is the largest country on the African continent.

Aziz: Algeria is the largest country in Africa and the gateway to Africa. It is located in northern Africa. Algeria is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea in the north, Libya and Tunisia in the east, Niger, Mali and Mauritania in the southeast and south respectively, and Morocco in the west. The weather in Algeria is Mediterranean with four distinct seasons, having mild autumn and spring. It's not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter. I think the weather in Algeria is perfect. Algeria also has the world's largest desert, the Sahara, which covers most of North Africa, including Morocco, Algeria and a small number of other regions. Now this season is actually very suitable for camping in the desert, now is the best time. It will be very hot in summer and very cold in winter.

Wei Qinxi: Are there any special activities for camping in the desert?

Aziz: You can play sand skiing and ride camels. In there also can use wood to make fires and cook food, giving people a traditional feeling.

Wei Qinxi: Camping in the desert can be an amazing experience, but is it a little dangerous to go?

Aziz: Not really, there are no dangerous places. People are not allowed to go to dangerous places alone. My friend and I have been there many times and it is a wonderful and unique experience.

Wei Qinxi: Is there any traditional food in Algeria?

Aziz: There are many. Tagine, for example, is a stew with a unique aroma, chicken in it, and vegetables such as carrots. There is also a msamen Algerian, which is usually eaten for breakfast and can be served with butter and jam. We are also one of the leading producers of dates, which we export to more than 90 countries in the world.

Wei Qinxi: I understand that Arabic is the official language of your country, but French is also widely used. Are Algerians bilingual?

Aziz: In Algeria, we speak French fluently. Generally speaking, we have been learning French since childhood, which is still widely used here for historical reasons. Even in casual conversation, we often mix up Arabic and French sentences. I started learning French at the age of seven when I was in primary school. So, it was normal for me to speak two languages while growing up. I feel comfortable speaking French with my friends. If I travel to Paris or Marseille, I can easily communicate in French. In large cities like Algiers, French phrases are often used in everyday speech.

Wei Qinxi: You are also good at English right? How do you learn English?

Aziz: Yeah, I probably started learning English when I was in middle school. After I finish the content and schedule of the school., I would spend an hour and a half learning English, including grammar, sentences and so on. I would practice all the time. Because I am sure that I will need to use English in many places in the future. I think both English and Chinese are very important in this day and age.

Wei Qinxi: Yes, English is very important. In China, we also need to start learning English from the second and third grades of primary school. At the end of each semester, there is also an English exam. Does everyone need to learn English in Algeria?

Aziz: It's a matter of personal choice. For example, if you don't want to go abroad, it's okay not to learn English. But for me, I wanted to study abroad since I was very young, so I always insisted on learning English.

Wang Yiwen: Then why do you want to learn Chinese?

Aziz: That's a good question. I want to learn Chinese because it's the first step to realize my dream. If I don't learn Chinese, I may be limited in the future. Now, to be honest, China is the trend of the world, and China has a very important position. For example, in Algeria, in the supermarket, a lot of things are made in China, and you can see them everywhere. In this time, China is very strong in economic strength and other aspects. So I decided to come to China to study and work.

Wei Qinxi: What is the education system like in Algeria? I have read some materials. In Algeria, from primary school to university, tuition fees are completely free, and university students enjoy food subsidies and scholarships. Is that right?

Aziz: Yes, tuition is free from elementary school to high school. In fact, university tuition is also free, so our education is actually free. But the problem is that when you get something for free, sometimes the quality of the thing is not so good. We also have private schools, which have very good educational standards and facilities. The tuition of public free schools is free, it is okay, but the quality of teaching may not be so good. That's why I decided not to go to university in Algeria. Some people also think that it is not necessary to go to university locally, so it is also a good choice to leave Algeria to study abroad after graduation from high school, such as Europe, China and the United States. If you get a master's degree or a doctor's degree in Algeria, it's hard for you to find a job.

Wei Qinxi: How many years does it take to complete the undergraduate degree to the doctoral degree?

Aziz: An undergraduate degree takes two years, a master's degree takes up to four years, and a doctoral degree takes about seven years.

Wei Qinxi: Will you find a good job if you get a master's degree or a doctor's degree abroad and then return to Algeria?

Aziz: It's actually a good idea, and a lot of people do that. Study abroad and get a degree ,and work abroad at the same time, you can get a good salary. But if you decide to return to Algeria after completing your studies, the situation may be different.

5.

Wei Qinxi : What are the most popular career choices in Algeria?

Aziz: It's business. Especially in my home city of Ghardaia , we started in business at a very young age. In my case, I started working with my dad when I was nine and ten years old, and he taught me business skills like how to communicate well with people and how to present products to people that we couldn't learn in school. There are several prominent families in my hometown who are known for their wealth and influence. One family even owns private hospitals and other important assets. They have accumulated a lot of resources over the years, which enables them to carry out projects that even the state can not run alone, and these families can do this from the beginning of business. When we are very young, business thinking has been accompanied by our growth process. Usually our school year starts in October and ends in July, and then we have three months off. During the holiday, my friend and I will choose to work instead of taking a vacation. Work is very important. For example, before I came to China, I worked remotely for an online business company for almost a year. So for us, we don't have much time to rest. When we study, we study. When we don't study, we work.

Wei Qinxi: Do you feel tired of such a continuous life?

Aziz: No, I think it's vital to work hard and set clear goals for ourselves at this age between 19 and 25, so that after 30 we can rest more leisurely.

6.

Wei Qinxi: I heard that you went to Shaoxing for work a couple of days ago. Did you have any gains there?

Aziz: Of course! It was a good experience for me because I had a chance to practice my Chinese skills with the local people and learn some expressions related to business, which will be very helpful for my future career. I don't want to be limited to academic Chinese, like hello, good morning, but I would like to have the opportunity to learn some business-related expressions, such as how to negotiate prices, what is the minimum order quantity, color preferences and design specifications.

7.

Wei Qinxi: Was it your own decision to come to China, or was it suggested by your parents?

Aziz: It was my decision and my family was very supportive. For me, China is the right choice. The number of foreigners in China is increasing. In Algeria, two years ago, many people may not know much about China, and not many people learn Chinese. But now, when I talk about China with my friends, many of them are very interested in China, and many of them have applied to Chinese schools in other cities such as Wuhan, Guangzhou and Qingdao. In Algeria, it used to be common to go to Europe, the United States or Canada to study after graduating from high school, but now China has become the most popular choice.

8.

Wei Qinxi: What is your biggest feeling after coming to China to live and study? Do you think it's different from the country you've lived in before?

Aziz: For me, Chinese is very difficult and the food is still getting used to. I like Beijing Duck. Also, every Chinese person I met was very friendly. What I've noticed more in China is that people are particularly helpful. Whenever you need help, whether it's finding something or navigating, there's always someone nearby ready to lend a hand. This willingness to help and communicate with others is something I have never encountered in other countries. This is a very attractive aspect of living in China.

9.

Wei Qinxi: Were you worried about coming to China to study alone?

Aziz: No, I don't.

Wei Qinxi: You are a very independent and brave person. For other young people who want to study abroad but have concerns, can you give them some advice?

Aziz: The first thing I want to say is to dare to take risks. Get out of your comfort zone. That's how you grow up. If you stay within your comfort zone, you won't improve. When you're older, you may be limited. This is especially true for those with family responsibilities and children. They can't afford to stagnate and need to work all the time. It's hard to get out of your comfort zone then. In our culture, from an early age, children are taught to be responsible. My father didn't just give me money to buy things. When I was very young, he really encouraged me to work and earn my own money. It wasn't because he couldn't afford it, but he wanted me to see the value of hard work and responsibility early on. There are also many people who may not agree with this approach, but I believe it has shaped me into a more capable and resilient person.

Wang Yiwen: I also think this is very good, because if you are financially independent, you don't need to hesitate or worry a lot when you want to buy something, which also means that your parents won't influence you to make many decisions. The sooner you achieve financial independence, the more freedom you have to explore different paths and opportunities. If you only rely on your parents' money, you may not feel the necessity or motivation to work or try new things because financial support is easy to come by.

Aziz: Also, based on my own experience, I think it's rewarding to have the opportunity to spend time and talk with older people or people who are senior in a certain field. For example, if I have free time, I will choose to meet with those who are older or better than me. I believe this will be a great inspiration for me, because their rich experience can teach me a lot. Not only they could provide valuable advice and insights, but they are always full of wisdom and can bring many meaningful topics. Get along with them and learn from them, and you will become better and better.
