Melady, from Uzbekistan, is a student majoring in Chinese Language and Literature, admitted in 2024.

Pansy: I'm curious about why your name is "美化(měi huà)". It's usually a verb and rarely used as a name, so when I first heard it, I wanted to know the story behind it. After thinking it over, I thought "梅花(méi huā)" might suit you better. It's a flower that blooms in the cold winter and has been praised throughout history.

Melady: That's right! My Chinese teacher gave me this name when I was in Uzbekistan. She told me it was a type of flower and explained its meaning, but I only remembered the pronunciation and didn't know which two Chinese characters it was. In the end, I chose the characters "美化(měi huà)" for my name.

Pansy: When it comes to Uzbekistan, the blue domes and the exquisite patterns are what leave the deepest impression on me. Could you give me a more detailed introduction?

Melady: Of course, we have many such buildings, each with its own unique patterns.

Registan Square is located in Samarkand, the second-largest city in Uzbekistan and once our capital. This square is surrounded by three magnificent madrasas and is one of the most famous landmarks. Today, the architectural complex and its decorations are still well-preserved, and they become even more stunning when lit up at night, attracting tourists from all over the world.

The Kalon Minaret is the most famous architectural monument in Bukhara, towering over the entire city and visible from several kilometers away. The Kalon Mosque, built with blue bricks, is located on the square in front of the minaret and is incredibly exquisite.

In our country, many buildings such as mausoleums, madrasas, and mosques are adorned with a variety of mosaic tiles and ceramic wall decorations, as well as turquoise niche domes, which are distinctive features of our architecture.

Pansy: Oh, and the dances and music, the costumes and musical instruments were truly eye-catching, and I also had the chance to experience Ikat craftsmanship up close.

Melady: Yes, those are our traditional musical instruments and traditional attire.

Pansy: I volunteered at the Asian Games last year, and the Uzbekistan badges were very beautiful. It was a pity that I didn't find anyone to exchange them with. With this event, I'm particularly interested in Uzbekistan. Your country seems to have a visa-free policy for us, but it feels expensive to fly from China. I hope to have the opportunity to visit in the future!

Melady: That's correct, the visa-free policy is very convenient. If you were to fly from Europe, the cost would be lower. When we flew to China, the one-way ticket was around two thousand, which wasn't too expensive for us.

Pansy: Have you visited any other cities in China?

Melady: Unfortunately, I've only been here for about three months, and I haven't been anywhere other than Hangzhou and Yiwu. But my husband has been to many cities. He studied in China a few years ago and returned home after the pandemic broke out. We studied at the same school, got married after graduation, and then decided to come to China together to continue learning Chinese.

Pansy: Last September, I had the pleasure of attending the "Uzbekistan Night" international exchange event at the China National Silk Museum, which was a truly fascinating experience! I tasted the local specialty cuisine, and the fried rice was incredibly fragrant, while the baked buns were also quite delicious.

Melady: Yes, that's our special pilaf (Plov), filled with lots of meat, usually eaten with flatbread (Obi Non). The flatbread can be engraved with various patterns, and you can even have your name inscribed on it. We love meat, and the baked buns (Somsa) are also filled with meat and onions, among other ingredients. Have you heard of Shashlik? It's somewhat like grilled skewers.

Pansy: I feel like your food is quite similar to the food in Xinjiang, China.

Melady: We had heard that before coming to China, but after tasting it ourselves, we found there are still some differences.

Pansy: How are you adapting to Chinese food?

Melady: Not very well, I've noticed that you rarely eat bread, focusing mainly on rice and noodles, even eating the same thing for several days in a row. We like to change it up and not just eat the same thing every day.

Pansy: I don't know why, but I always feel like bread isn't filling enough, haha. There's a saying in China, "Rice in the south, noodles in the north." Although I'm from the south, I particularly enjoy noodles and can eat them for days on end, especially stir-fried noodles.

Melady: I also really like Chinese stir-fried noodles; they taste better than soup noodles, haha.

Pansy: Do you have noodles there?

Melady: Of course! Lagman, which can be eaten as either soup noodles or stir-fried noodles, is usually accompanied by lamb, beef, potatoes, carrots, and onions.

Pansy: What do you like to do in your free time?

Melady: To be honest, I don't have much free time. As you know, I have a TESOL certificate and work as an international English teacher, teaching students from all over the world online. When I'm not busy, my husband and I like to go to the movies or dine out at restaurants.

Pansy: What about your personal hobbies? Do you like reading?

Melady: Yes, I enjoy reading. It allows my mind to think and engage, but I'm not a fan of romance novels. I don't believe those scenarios could happen in real life, and I tell my students the same, but they seem to really believe in them.

Pansy: I read them too, but I don't take the emotions seriously; they're all fictional. Nowadays, people rarely sit down to read books. Most of the time is spent scrolling through short videos, including myself. But gradually, I've found it harder to focus on long texts and easy to get distracted.

Melady: Exactly, even during classes, it's easy to lose focus, which is not good. Speaking of movies, some people prefer to watch two or three-minute summaries online to quickly grasp what a movie is about, but they miss the true essence of the film. So, if I'm tired after work, I like to go to the cinema. It's a great way to relax.

Pansy: Yes, the seats are very comfortable, haha. What type of movies do you like?

Melady: I prefer action movies. Jackie Chan is very famous, and I've seen many of his films.

Pansy: I've seen his movies too, but I prefer light-hearted animated films with cultural depth like "Coco" that leave a lasting impression.

Pansy: Do you have any special skills or talents?

Melady: I can cook. Except for lunchtime when I have classes in the afternoon, I usually go home to cook. I have a particular fondness for sweets and can bake pastries, such as making birthday cakes for my husband.

Pansy: I also really enjoy sweets. By the way, does your country have any special snacks?

Melady: Kurt is a snack I really enjoy in my daily life. It has a sour taste and can be slowly melted in the mouth, making it suitable for eating while chatting or watching movies.

Pansy: What a coincidence, I also like sour things, as well as yogurt. This Kurt sounds a lot like the yogurt balls from Xinjiang, but I haven't tried it yet.

Melady: I miss that taste too!

Pansy: So, what are your plans for the future?

Melady: I plan to study Chinese well at ZISU first, and then apply for a master's degree in business in China. If there aren't any suitable options, I might consider applying to schools in Europe.

Pan Jin: I wish you all the best!

Melady: Thank you!
