Gresia, from Peru, is a student majoring in Chinese Language and Culture of the class of 2025.

Duan Yushan: First of all, a very warm welcome to our first episode of "Heshan Face to Face" this semester! I've heard that the important Peruvian festival "Inti Raymi" is coming up soon. Could you introduce it to us?
Gresia: "Inti Raymi" means "The Festival of the Sun" in Quechua. The Incas worshipped the Sun God (Inti), believing that the sun was the source of life and abundance. The winter solstice (June in the Southern Hemisphere) is the shortest day of the year. People would hold grand ceremonies to pray for the sun's return, bringing warmth and fertility. Nowadays, Inti Raymi is not only a cultural heritage but also a source of pride for Cusco. A week before the celebration, there are music parades and handicraft markets on the streets. My friends and I always love to buy "chicha morada" and roasted corn. Schools also organize activities, and teachers teach us to weave patterns symbolizing the sun with wool. Of course, the most interesting part is watching tourists try to dance the traditional "Huayno" dance - their movements may be stiff, but everyone will laugh and clap!

What is your most memorable festival memory of your hometown?
Gresia: The most unforgettable one was last year's "Qoyllur Rit'i". At four in the morning, my dad and I wrapped ourselves in alpaca blankets and followed thousands of believers to climb the 4,800-meter snow-capped mountain in the dark! The wind was piercingly cold, but the starry sky was as bright as if it were studded with diamonds. My mom said I was freezing with my nose running and still giggling, but at that moment, I felt as if I had touched the souls of the Inca ancestors.

Duan Yushan: Could you tell us why you came to China to study Chinese?
Gresia: When I was in college in Peru, my major was translation, specifically Spanish to English translation. Later, due to the school's regulations, I needed to learn another language, so I chose Chinese. Chinese is different from Western languages; it belongs to a completely different system. I also attended different courses to see how they were taught. I really enjoyed the Chinese class, and that's why I decided to continue with it. But now I find Chinese a bit difficult. Among listening, speaking, reading and writing, the most challenging part is listening. However, I really like reading; the forms of Chinese characters are so cute.

4. Duan Yushan: After you finish your undergraduate studies, do you plan to pursue a master's degree? Besides Chinese, what other majors are you interested in?
Gresia: I do plan to pursue a master's degree. Maybe it will be translation or business, I haven't decided yet.
Duan Yushan: Will you continue your studies in China?
Gresia: I really want to continue my studies in China because Chinese is so interesting. I enjoy every moment here.

Duan Yushan: What aspect of Chinese culture are you most interested in? For example, tea culture, clothing culture, or food culture?
Gresia: Oh! I really like tea culture! My friend and I went to a tea shop the other day and bought some tea bags. Chinese tea is truly amazing. I've never tasted such delicious tea before. I also like the clothing culture here. I saw many girls taking photos in traditional clothing by the West Lake. They were very beautiful.
Duan Yushan: Yes. If you have the chance, you should visit the ancient capital Xi'an. The Tang-style clothing there is of a different style and very beautiful. You can take a set of photos there.
Duan Yushan: Are there many Chinese people in Peru? Will learning Chinese give you an advantage in employment when you return to Peru?
Gresia: In our country, some schools have already offered Chinese language courses. In supermarkets, many products are marked with "Made in China", which reflects the widespread presence of Chinese products in our country. In fact, this may be one of the largest-scale import programs that our country has carried out from China. At the same time, more and more Chinese businessmen are coming to our country to conduct business. I believe that our country has maintained a good relationship with China over the past few years.
Duan Yushan: Can you introduce a Peruvian dish to us? Have you adapted to the local cuisine since you came to China?
Gresia: I'd like to talk about the dish Ceviche. It's as refreshing as the sunshine and the sea in Peru. Ceviche has a history of more than 2,000 years! My mother said that the earliest indigenous people in Peru used banana juice to marinate fish. Later, the Spanish brought limes and onions, African immigrants added sweet potatoes and corn, and Japanese chefs made the knife skills an art... Nowadays, Ceviche is a "hybrid delicacy" that the whole world envies! Fresh white meat fish is cut into crystal-like pieces, and then topped with lime juice, minced garlic, chili peppers and salt. Let it marinate for 5 minutes with a "whoosh" sound - the magic of the lime makes the fish meat become "cooked" instantly! Finally, sprinkle with shredded red onions and coriander, and serve it with fried corn kernels, sweet potato chips and lettuce. For me, Chinese cuisine is a bit spicy, but it's really delicious too!

Duan Yushan: Do you have any plans for the new semester? For example, will there be a Chinese language exam?
Gresia: Yes, I will have a Chinese language exam this year, and I will put in a lot of effort for it! In my free time, I will practice listening and reading more, and I will also actively participate in class discussions. Besides, I want to travel to Shanghai. I heard from my friends that Hangzhou is very close to Shanghai.
