Denzel, from Natal, Brazil, is a student majoring in Chinese language and culture in the class of 2025.

Ji Yaqing: Could you share with us some information about the traditional Brazilian festival, Carnival?

Denzel: I could try. This traditional festival is a spectacular event where people flood the streets, celebrating with boundless joy for three consecutive days. While it may not be the most prominent festival in my city, I have made it a personal tradition to join the parade, both last year and planning to do so again over the next three years, because of my deep love for the festivities. The carnival parades are vibrant displays of samba music and dance, deeply rooted in Brazil’s rich cultural heritage. If you ever find yourself in Brazil during this time, don't miss out on the chance to immerse yourself in the lively rhythms and dances that make this celebration truly unique.

Ji Yaqing: Are there any dress requirements for this carnival?

Denzel: No, I don’t think you need to be too cautious during the carnival. Actually, I believe you can use or enjoy almost everything in the carnival atmosphere. For example, if you’re talking about gloves, maybe you don’t even need them during the festivities because the carnival is a great opportunity to fully immerse yourself and let go of any unnecessary restrictions.

Ji Yaqing: I heard that you really like drama, can you share your story with us?

Denzel: It's quite amusing. This photo captures one of my memorable performances as a drag queen. In my city, I participate in drag shows, which are always exciting and full of energy. Today, I want to share a bit about this particular performance with you.Playing a drag queen is an interesting and creative experience that involves more than just wearing extravagant clothes; it also includes transforming your body and face to fully embody the character. It’s really fun and incredibly cool to explore this form of artistic expression. In this specific instance, I dressed up as a black queen for the first time. Although I’ve only done this once so far, it was an unforgettable experience. I believe there’s much more to explore and learn, and I’m definitely considering trying it again in the future. The process of dressing up and performing allows me to connect deeply with the audience and enjoy the art of storytelling through a unique lens.

Ji Yaqing: Let's talk about Chinese. In your opinion, what is the most difficult part of learning Chinese? Is it pronunciation, grammar, or Chinese characters?

Denzel: To be honest, understanding spoken Chinese is the hardest part for me. While writing and reading are relatively easy and manageable, listening comprehension is a real challenge. Even when people speak at a normal pace or use simple phrases, I still find it difficult to fully grasp what they’re saying. I think I need more exposure to spoken Chinese in order to improve my listening skills.

Ji Yaqing:What do you think is the biggest cultural difference between Brazil and China?

Denzel:I think in Brazil, hugs are very common and an important part of our culture. Personally, I really enjoy hugging because it’s a warm and friendly way to connect with others. However, in China, I’ve noticed that people tend to greet each other with a handshake instead. When I first met someone here in China, it was quite different from what I’m used to back home. In Brazil, when you meet a new person for the first time, a hug feels natural and heartfelt. But here, I’ve learned to adapt to the local customs, like shaking hands or even giving a polite nod. Maybe in some cases, there could be a kiss on the cheek, but that’s more typical in Brazilian culture.

Ji Yaqing: If we want to travel to Brazil, where would you recommend?

Denzel: First, let me tell you about my city, Natal. If you enjoy hot weather, then you’ll love it there! You should definitely visit Natal if you’re a fan of beautiful beaches because we have plenty of them—big, stunning, and perfect for relaxation. Personally, I’m not a huge beach person, but if you enjoy beaches, I highly recommend visiting. It’s a great destination, especially if you’re looking for something similar to the Caribbean.

Another place you might like is Maragogi, which is located in another state. The beaches and the ocean there are absolutely breathtaking, with crystal-clear waters that remind you of paradise. I think you’ll find both Natal and Maragogi amazing if you love warm weather, sandy beaches, and vibrant coastal vibes.

Ji Yaqing: Are there any social rules that foreigners do not know in Brazil?

Denzel: In Brazil, social rules regarding punctuality can be quite relaxed compared to other cultures. For instance, if you're invited to a party that starts at 8 o'clock, it's perfectly acceptable to arrive around 9 o'clock instead of precisely at 8. This flexibility is part of our culture and reflects a more laid-back approach to time management. However, in China, punctuality is highly valued and considered a sign of respect. People tend to arrive on time or even a little early for meetings, events, and social gatherings. This cultural difference highlights the importance of understanding and adapting to local customs when traveling or living abroad. In Brazil, being late is often seen as normal and not necessarily rude.

Ji Yaqing: Brazil's football culture is world-renowned, and football here is not just a sport but also an important part of national identity and pride. However, does every Brazilian love football as much as the outside world tends to believe? Are there any exceptions? We are very interested in learning more about the details.

Denzel: In Brazil, almost everyone understands football because it’s such a big part of our culture. However, not everyone necessarily enjoys playing it. For me personally, I love playing football and I’m even part of my own football team. While some people might not enjoy playing the sport, they still tend to have a good understanding of it due to how deeply ingrained football is in our society.
