Leylani, from Mexico, who is studying International Economics and Trade now.

Q1: Christmas is coming, I would like to know how you celebrate the holidays in Mexico?

Leylani: Christmas is a special event in Mexican culture, and we usually choose to spend the holidays at our grandparents' house. For example, we spend Christmas Eve with our mother's grandparents and Christmas Day with our father's grandparents. Most Mexican families are large, so when we refer to our immediate family, it can be as many as 10 to 20 people or more. During the festivities, usually, my grandmother would be in charge of cooking all the dishes, with help from my aunts, like my mother; and youngsters my age, would help in the kitchen. Or sometimes, we would buy the dinner dishes separately, for example, my mother would be in charge of the dessert and my uncle would bring the meat dish and, so on with each main member. At the end of the day, we usually did not decide to throw away the leftover food from this event. We will eat the same food in 2 or 3 days, reheating it. As, you tell me, we have this in common with China, "reheating" the food, but the difference I see is that all Mexican food can be easily reheated, but not all Chinese food.

Q2: Why did you choose to come to China for the exchange program?

Leylani: To be honest, it's hard for me to pinpoint why. It's a "feeling." Over the course of my life, I have been interested in Asian culture, but more so in China. As has been attending after-school Tai Chi classes in Colima, Mexico where the teachers taught tai chi, kung fu and Chinese medicine. That got me very interested in Chinese culture. When I was choosing what career to study and looking at the possibilities with different Universities.I saw that UDC has launched a dual degree study abroad exchange program, and there are many countries to choose from, such as Germany, Colombia and Chile, but I chose China. Also, I think China and Mexico have completely different cultures, and it was what made me want to experience those new sensations.

Q3: Is there anything you find different in China since you arrived?

Leylani:There are quite a few things, even in the smallest details. As is the simple act of drinking water. When I first came to Hangzhou, I wanted to buy ice cubes and drink cold drinks. So I went to the bubble tea shop, ordered the coldest option, but found that I only had half of the milk tea in my hand, and the remaining half of the cup was all ice. I actually want a cup of tea with cold milk, but not with ice cubes. So on another occasion I asked for a small amount of ice, but discovered that it was not enough, because the drink was not really cold. Drinks in our country tend to be very cold without the need for much ice.

Q4: What's your favorite Chinese dish?

Leylani: I love dumplings. Because every time you can prepare them differently, dry or with soup and different sauces. But actually, I love every Chinese dish.

Q5: After coming to China, do you find anything different from Mexico?

Leylani: The dependency of cellphones. I don't think there's a way to live without your phone in China. But in Mexico, if you want, we can go without our phones. We do not need our phones for buying. We usually use cash or bank cards. Moreover, online shopping in China is very convenient, which is not a common thing in our country. I would think, how can you buy something online that you haven't seen or touched? Could it be a "knock-off", could it be a very low-quality thing? I think you should go to the mall and see it before you can make a decision whether to buy it or not. Also, in China, you can pay for all kinds of transportation by scanning the QR code, but not in our country. We will have a special transportation card, and then charge money into it, for example, when taking the subway, the five of us will directly take that card and then each person will swipe the card in turn to enter the station. But for taking the bus, we need to have change ready for coin insertion, because sometimes the driver is not responsible for giving you change.

Q6: If we were to visit your country, what places would you recommend?

Leylani: First of all, our capital, Mexico City. Mexico City is home to centuries of architectural design. The Historic Center preserves historical buildings and monuments from ancient civilizations such as the Teotihuacan. Likewise, the viceregal era, like the Metropolitan Cathedral, like the Palace of Fine Arts. In addition, Mexico City brings together a variety of cuisines from various states and you can eat snacks and dishes from all over the world. The best tacos are in Mexico City. The next state that I recommend is Oaxaca. In food, it is characterized by a special sauce (Mole) made with chocolate, different chilies and various spices, which is so delicious. I won't say any more, because I miss her so much. It is also characterized by its colorful crafts, its culture and its beautiful beaches. Yucatán, Within the territory of the state of Yucatán there are two of the more than thirty sites declared World Heritage Sites of Mexico by UNESCO corresponding to the Mayan archaeological site of Chichén Itzá where the famous Pyramid of Kukulkan is located, which in turn is a of the new seven wonders of the modern world, and to the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal whose best-known structure is the Pyramid of the Fortune Teller. In addition, the ring of cenotes is on the Indicative list to be a World Heritage Site of Mexico. The fourth state is Chiapas, it has impressive natural beauty. The Lacandona jungle, the Montes Azules biosphere reserve, and the Agua Azul Waterfalls are just some of the many natural attractions you can enjoy. You can also explore the region's lakes, rivers and mountains, as well as its national parks and reserves. In addition, the coffee culture and production is delicious. Then the state, Michoacán, has Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity designated by UNESCO, as well as Masterpieces of Intangible Heritage. It is a place with a sanctuary for monarch butterflies that travel from Canada to this area of Michoacan, which you can see fluttering over your head between November and March. The scene is quite spectacular!
