Valeryia, from Belarus, who is studying Chinese language and culture now.
Q1: I had watched a short video about your country’s flag. Do you know something about it?
Kate: The red one is about blood because many many years ago we had different wars and that's why many people died who were fighting for our country, for our territory. The green one is like, maybe our land. We have many forest, trees, rivers, lakes and so on. Moreover, our country is called “A Blue Eyed Country”. About the pattern on the left, it's like, in Belarus, the science and continuation of our culture and each of this ornament has its own meaning.
Draniki:它就像土豆做的煎饼,有时里面还会夹肉;
Halušky:它是由土豆和面粉制成的,切成形状不规则的小球后直接放入沸水中煮熟,口感柔软;
Q2: How about your food? I heard of that there are many dishes with potatoes. Maybe I like them very much if possible hahahaha~
Valeryia: Yeah, we have.
1.Draniki. It is like potato pancakes, sometimes with meat inside.
2.Halušky: It is made of potatoes and flour, cut into irregularly shaped small balls and then directly cooked in boiling water, resulting in a soft texture.
3.Babka is a baked potato, usually made by adding lard and onion to potatoes and mixing them together. Various meats are also added, and it can be eaten directly or with sour cream or milk.
4.Machanka is a Belarusian stew with pork, sour cream, flour, and beef broth. The meat can be bacon, sausage, or ham, and is cut into small pieces. Typically, there are also onions and mushrooms.
These kind of dishes are traditional dishes. We can try them only in restaurants.
Kate: But my mom sometimes also can cook Draniki by herself. We can also cook Machanka. It’s like not so hard to do it by yourself, but we don't have a kitchen now hahahaha. There are many dairy factories in our country, so the varieties of milk, yogurt, and cheese are countless. We also export powdered milk to China, but we prefer to drink liquid milk in our daily life. Although many people say that Belarusian milk is delicious, after tasting local brands in China, we feel that there is no difference. We also have a drink called KBAC in our country. It looks like beer but it’s not beer. It tastes sweet and many children really like it.
Q3: Are you accustomed to Chinese food?
Kate: When I was in Belarus, I tried Chinese food many times, for example I ate Kung Pao Chicken, this is, I guess one of the most delicious maybe for me in Belarus and also traditional. We have many Chinese restaurants and they also have, some of your dishes, like baozi.
Pansy: I recommend wonton to you. On the first floor of the Hexiang Canteen, if you are interested, maybe have a try. It’s very cheap, 4 yuan with 20 wontons in a bowl.
Valeryia: When we just arrived in China, to be honest, we found the rice and noodles were both very spicy. At first Kate couldn't accept them, but slowly she was able to eat spicy food. In our country, we don't use a lot of oil, and vegetables are mostly steamed.
Kate: I don't like vegetables and fruits so much. But I like fruits very much here. Compared to Hangzhou, fruits are more expensive in our country. Because we can go to the shop and choose whatever we want in the box and it costs much cheaper.
Valeryia: We love Bingtanghulu too, which includes hawthorn, orange, strawberry or grape on sticks with sugar coating. It's sour and sweet, tasting so good. The milk tea here is also much cheaper than that in our country. By the way, during the National Day holiday, several of our international student friends and I had a delicious hot pot together.
Q4:How about cities in your country ? What traditional buildings or other typical places to visit?
Valeryia: The National Library is a landmark building in Minsk, with a total of 23 floors. It looks like a large diamond cut during the day, and at night, it is illuminated with colorful lights.
Kate: Hahahaha some people think it is one of the ugliest buildings in the world. I think that "Big Golden Ball", a hotel on the bank of Qiantang River in Hangzhou, is more beautiful than this one.
Valeryia: We also have many small castles with a long history, and the tickets are very cheap. Our country is also known as the "Land of Thousands of Lakes", with not only beautiful lakes but also many national parks. And just somewhere in forest, it also includes different activities.
Kate: Yeah, just enjoy the view and the air is very fresh too. It’s like I was there and we maybe rent a house with my family and relaxed there for many days. My city Baranovichi, a small town, is famous for rail because it depends on train connection. There is a museum with plenty of old trains and you can go into them to look. I want to say that there is a railway station where kids can drive the train. It’s not dangerous.
Valeryia: In our country, not so many people, I guess 9 million. I come form Minsk, the capital, which is more populated.
Q5: How about your own university? Let me see, the name is Belarus State Economic University, right? Can you describe it?
Valeryia: Yeah, it's. But I can't say a lot because two years ago I studied in the other town. Kate, can you say a lot about it?
Kate: Hahahahaha okay. What should I say? Maybe it's much smaller than ZISU. Our campus looks like maybe separated buildings. We also don’t have gates and walls around as well as dormitories. In our university, we have many faculties, but they are connected with economy and only our faculty is called international business communications and we are like interpreters. So we've been learning three languages. For instance, I learn English, Chinese and Turkish.
Valeryia: But I learn English, Chinese and German. Unfortunately, it is our third language and we don’t have much time to study. So about Turkish and German, we can’t speak fluently.
Kate: Oh, of course I can ask for a sale, for example. I guess it's really significant because I want to buy more clothes hahahahaha
Pansy: I am learning Spanish as the second foreign language and French as the third. I think French is more difficult than Spanish because Spanish pronunciation is fixed and easy to remember like every letter won't change, just the same pronunciation, but in French more complicated!
Kate: Yeah, I guess French is much more difficult than Chinese. It’s like 5 letters in the word and you need to pronounce only two of them. Maybe there are long words, but their pronunciation should be short because many of the sounds do not pronounce.
Q6: What grade are you in at your university? What are your plans after finishing it?
Kate: We have about 80 people in our faculty on our fourth grade and I guess that I am the youngest. In China, maybe mainly students go to the university around 18 years old, but I passed my exams for entrance to university when I was 16. Oh, our education is four and half years. It's strange, you know, some people wonder why we need to study for this half year.
Valeryia: But on the other hand, if we don't have this, we can't have the opportunity to be here because when we are on the first grade or on the 5th grade, we can’t go to any exchange programs and so on. I guess we don't have internships in our faculty, but we have different kinds of payments. For instance, the government pay for my education and I need to work for 2 years in the chosen place.
Kate: I pay for myself, my parents pay for my education, and that's why after graduation, I can go wherever I want even if I don’t want to work, that's no problem. But if she doesn’t want to work in the place that the government chooses, she needs to pay. I heard that in China, if you are a foreign and white girl who wants to be a teacher of English language or Russian language, you can easily find a high-paid job, is it right? Valeryia: Maybe good because China is so safe. Very high level of safety. And we can just put our things on desks and continue to choose what we want to eat. Well, no one takes away.
