Chaimae, from Morocco, is a student majoring in International Economics and Trade in the Class of 2024.

This episode is different from previous ones. Chaimae also invited her Moroccan friends to join the interview and share the culture of Morocco with Chinese and international students. At the beginning of the interview, Chaimae first introduced herself briefly and shared some of her experiences and insights about studying and living in China.
Chaimae:First of all, I really want to thank my friends for coming here to support me. I'm really happy. Now, let me introduce myself. My name Chaimae, I'm from Morocco, and I lived there until I graduated from high school. It was around that time that I began to think about coming to China. This was because I had seen some videos and stories about China before, and they really intrigued me. I believed that coming to China would help me find what I was looking for. Previously, due to the pandemic, I had been waiting for the opportunity to come to China. I didn't want to study online,I wanted to actually be here. I waited for about three years—it felt like such a long time. At some point, I almost gave up and even considered studying in other countries. But there was a strong determination inside me that kept pushing me to give it another try. And finally, as you can see, I made it to China. During my first year, I studied Chinese in Nanchang. It was really challenging at the beginning. I could only speak very basic and simple words. In my second year, I came to Hangzhou, and I was honored to be admitted to the university. Sometimes I even thought I should have come here earlier, but life is like that—you need to go through challenges to get the treasures. Now, I'm studying both trade and economics, as well as Chinese, which I really love. It's not easy, but I won't give up.
Wei Qinxi: I am very curious about your name, and I even looked up "Chaimae" . Is it an Arabic name?
Chaimae: Yes, it carries the meaning of a kind girl. As my friend mentioned, it also signifies "the one who receives the most."
Wei Qinxi:I heard that Moroccans start learning French, Arabic, and English from a young age. Is that true?
Chaimae: Yes, we can understand almost all Arabic speakers, but sometimes others may not understand our Arabic, possibly due to accents or dialects. Additionally, Morocco’s second language is French, so we learn that as well.
Wei Qinxi:When do you start learning English?
Chaimae: We learn it in school. Some schools teach English as the second language, while others prioritize French.
Wei Qinxi: Mastering three languages is truly impressive—memorizing vocabulary and grammar across all of them isn’t easy. Now that you’re also learning Chinese, what challenges do you find hardest to overcome? How does it differ from the languages you already know?
Chaimae: It’s completely different. Chinese characters and pronunciation are both very difficult. Languages like French share similarities with English, and Arabic has an alphabet, but Chinese is just direct characters.
Wei Qinxi:I also know that your country has the best mint tea in the world. What does it taste like? When do you usually drink it?
Chaimae: Mint tea actually originated in China, but we prepare it in our own way. The general process is like this: first, boil the water, then pour it over the tea leaves to rinse away their bitterness. Then, brew the tea—first steeping the leaves, then adding mint and sugar and letting it simmer a little longer. When pouring the tea, we lift the teapot high to let the tea stream into the cups. Sometimes, we pour it back and forth two or three times to better blend the tea, mint, and sugar. The whole process usually takes about ten to fifteen minutes. Personally, I don’t really like tea that much, but my friends and most Moroccans love mint tea—they usually drink it twice a day, in the morning or the afternoon.

Wei Qinxi: Is there any aspect of Chinese culture you're particularly curious about?
Chaimae: The Chinese zodiac is fascinating! Each year is represented by an animal, right? Like this year is the Year of the Snake. We'd love to learn more about this.
Wei Qinxi: Wow, this is actually the first time I've been asked about this! Each zodiac animal represents different kinds of wisdom and characteristics. The most well-known legend goes like this: A long, long time ago, the Jade Emperor in heaven decided to select twelve animals to represent the earthly years, making it easier for people to track time. He announced that all animals should race to the Heavenly Court on the first day of the lunar new year. The first twelve to arrive would become the zodiac signs. The current order is: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. What's really interesting is that the Rat wasn't originally the fastest. Knowing it was small and slow, it asked the kind-hearted Ox for a ride on its back. The Ox agreed. On the day of the race, the Ox was actually the fastest, about to arrive first. But just before the finish line, the Rat jumped off the Ox's back and dashed ahead, becoming the first zodiac sign. The Ox had to settle for second place.
Wei Qinxi: Could you recommend some tourist attractions in Morocco?
Chaimae: Of course! There are so many. For example, my friend's hometown—Chefchaouen, also known as the "Blue Pearl." It's nestled at the foot of the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco, and the entire town is painted in various shades of blue, from light to deep blue, like creating an ocean of blue.
Wei Qinxi: Does this place really exist? It looks like something straight out of a fairy tale!
Chaimae: It's absolutely real! Another must-visit is Casablanca, nicknamed the "White House," famous for its white buildings. And then there's Marrakesh, another iconic Moroccan city known as the "Red City," renowned worldwide.
Wei Qinxi: I'd love to see these places with my own eyes!

Other Students: What do traditional Moroccan clothes look like?
Chaimae: I want to introduce the Djellaba and the Caftan to you. The Djellaba is a loose-fitting robe that people wear regularly in daily life. The Caftan is also a robe, but with more elegant and luxurious designs, typically worn during festivals, weddings or other important occasions. For example, at weddings, everyone wears Caftans but in different colors. The bride might wear a more elaborate version adorned with jewels and other decorations, while other guests would wear simpler styles.

Wei Qinxi: Are there any differences between university education in Morocco and China?
Chaimae: The academic systems are somewhat different. In Morocco, university programs typically last three years, while in China they usually take four years. And did you know? University of Al-Karaouine in Morocco is actually one of the oldest universities in the world!
